- Biography -

Daughters of the Rock was initially formed in 1997 as an opportunity for three women, sharing Newfoundland roots, to sing laugh and share experiences of Newfoundland. As a result of the group's enthusiasm and the encouragement of others, Daughters of the Rock have become ambassadors of the music, stories and lore of Newfoundland and its Celtic ancestry to people outside the province.

The group is primarily an a cappella trio but performances can include stories, poetry, exerpts from Newfoundland literature as well as original material. Each member brings distinct strengths and expertise to the group. The individuals come from very diverse backgrounds and the combination allows the Daughters of the Rock to be adaptable and accommodating.

The versatility of the group is witnessed through the variety of venues that the group has performed in. These range from pubs, coffee shops, and churches, meeting halls, Victorian theatres to the Pride off the Rock festival in Brampton Sports Complex. Most recently Daughters of the Rock had the pleasure of participating in Newfoundland's Festival 500. The group has also been featured on City TV's Breakfast Television, CBC Radio's Fresh Air as well as many fund raising events and festivals in Toronto and the surrounding areas.

Daughters of the Rock are committed to preserving, promoting and performing the music and spoken word of traditional and modern day Newfoundland and its Celtic ancestry and to expose these traditions to people outside the province.

Toronto is a multicultural, diverse city that encourages people from all over the world to celebrate their differences. There are frequent and numerous opportunities for performances and the exchanging of ideas and traditions. Daughters of the Rock fit in well with this diversity. The Daughters of the Rock perform a family show that can be modified to suit the particular needs of the event and venue.

Since our mandate is to preserve and promote Newfoundland culture, we primarily perform material from Newfoundland. To put this in context, we also include music showing the ancestral background of Newfoundland. As well, we have learned other materials when specifically requested or when it was felt that it would be appropriate for specific events.

Daughters of the Rock handle all their own administration. Daughter Sherry Squires chooses and arranges the music. Daughter Jillian Rees-Brown handles promotions and Daughter Denise Norman keeps the books.

We have recently released our first CD Maiden Voyage and have been enjoying the opportunity it gives us to reach many more fans of our music.
